Building a Plant-Based Nutrition Movement

July 14, 2020, written by PPMNY Network Director Lianna Levine Reisner for VegFund

In 2016, I spent four weeks fighting what felt like three or four consecutive viruses — long before the word “virus” was on everyone’s mind. When I spiked a fever in my final round of sickness, I knew my immune health was compromised. At the time, I hadn’t realized how very unwell I had been, but feeling so extremely sick made me think hard about who I was and who I wanted to be. I wanted to help everyone enjoy good health — not just me, but my husband, my kids, and my community. That experience started me on an exploration of nutrition that eventually led to the launch of Plant Powered Metro New York (PPMNY), a health movement that connects and empowers local communities through whole-food, plant-based (WFPB) nutrition. Read on...

We Stand in Solidarity

June 9, 2020

We stand in solidarity with our Black communities in response to ongoing injustices.

We're standing up for Black lives to breathe deeply and freely, literally and figuratively, liberated from physical brutality and hate, the stifling legacy of slavery, and the inflammatory diseases that block airways and arteries. Food justice, health justice, racial justice -- these are all intertwined.

This week, we reflected as a team from many different racial backgrounds and recommitted ourselves to the task of centering Black leadership in the whole food, plant-based (WFPB) movement and elevating Black voices in our work.

As we move into summer, we are humbled to offer you a screening of The Invisible Vegan documentary followed by a talk-back with filmmaker Jasmine Leyva, a conversation on race and gender with Black VegFest leaders Omowale Adewale and LoriKim Alexander, and a probe into racial health disparities with Milton Mills, MD.
It is deeply important to us that our movement is responsive to the unique needs of people from many different cultures and lived experiences.

Keep us accountable by giving us feedback and ideas for where we can go next. We'd love to hear from you!
