Guidelines for PPMNY Meals and Potlucks

We love to gather people for meals because that’s where all the action happens! Sharing food helps us demonstrate the power and flavors of plants while building a healthy and empowered community.

Here are our evidence-based guidelines to make our meals both welcoming and healthy:
  • We serve dishes with only plant-sourced ingredients.
  • We choose whole grains over refined grains. Whole grain flours are fair play, although some people find benefits from eating only intact whole grains.
  • We keep salt and sweeteners to a minimum, and we like to choose unrefined sweeteners when we have the choice, like dried fruit pastes.
  • We prefer to offer dishes without any added oils, which is often difficult to achieve in restaurants.
  • We try to keep our dishes low in fat, including unsaturated fats from plants, so that the vast majority of our calories come from unrefined carbohydrates.
  • We don’t make a big deal about protein consumption, and we don’t supplement with protein powders.

When our team arranges meals at restaurants, we do our best to work with the chef to offer wholesome meals according to these guidelines -- but perfection is not always possible.

If you choose to bring a dish to a PPMNY potluck with any plant-based ingredients that we minimize, or with any common allergens, please note that the event organizer may choose to label your dish with its ingredients. This will assist those people in our community who are really careful to avoid specific ingredients for their health. If you have any questions, just ask!
