Food for Life Nutrition Classes

Plant Powered Metro New York presents Food for Life, an award-winning nutrition education and cooking class program developed by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Since 2001, Food for Life has delivered hands-on information about the direct role of plant-based nutrition in health and disease prevention to communities around the world. Designed by physicians, nurses, and registered dietitians, Food for Life promotes healthful eating based on the latest scientific research.

What's Included

We can bring a certified FFL instructor to your community to present your preferred program over 4-8 sessions. But that’s not all: We link our FFL participants to many other resources in PPMNY’s network, including the opportunity for Lifestyle Mentorship alongside our ongoing educational and supportive programming for long-term health promotion.

Each Food for Life class includes:
  • Information about how certain foods and nutrients work to promote or discourage disease.
  • Cooking demonstrations and tastings of delicious and healthful recipes to add to your repertoire.
  • Practical cooking skills, and tips for incorporating healthful eating habits into daily life.
  • A supportive and motivational atmosphere to empower participants to take charge of their health with the food on their plates.

Class Options

  • The Power of Food for Healthy Weight Management (5 or 7 sessions): Discover which foods are optimal to achieve your ideal weight.
  • The Power of Food for Cancer Prevention and Survival (4 or 7 sessions): Understand how to prepare cancer-fighting meals loaded with nutrients, fiber, low-fat foods, and healthy dairy alternatives.
  • The Power of Food for Diabetes Prevention and Treatment (4 or 8 sessions): Learn how a plant-based diet reduces the risk of diabetes and can greatly benefit those who have been diagnosed with the disease.
  • The Power of Food for Cardiovascular Health (3 sessions): Dig into the role of nutrition in keeping arteries clear and hearts pumping easily to prevent or overcome heart disease and hypertension.
  • The Power of Food for Healthy Aging (up to 10 sessions): Learn how to age with grace and dignity through the food on your plate, addressing cognitive, physical, and emotional health.
  • Your Body in Balance (up to 9 sessions; choose based on audience): Discover how dietary choices can have a surprisingly powerful effect on hormones and the problems they cause, including infertility, hot flashes, diabetes, and depression.
  • The Power of Plant-Based Nutrition for Health (4 sessions): Discover that the guiding principle for weight loss and good health is not restricting the amount of food eaten but rather choosing the healthiest foods. (This course does not include live cooking demonstrations.)
  • The Power of Food for Health on a Limited Budget (4 sessions): Find out about the economic value and health benefits of plant-based foods, and enjoy cooking demonstrations that do not require costly cooking gadgets or equipment.
  • The Power of Food for a Healthy Start - for kids! (1-4 sessions): Children ages 9-12 will learn about the health benefits of eating a plant-based diet while sampling delicious, kid-friendly recipes, empowering them with the knowledge and skills they need to establish healthy habits for life.

    • Foods for a Healthy Heart - Learn how a low-fat, plant-based diet, combined with regular exercise and a healthful overall lifestyle, can prevent, delay, and even reverse heart disease and other cardiovascular events.
